Amsterdam Research Centre for Gender and Sexuality

ARC-GS brings together UvA researchers who work on questions of gender and/or sexuality. Institutionally, ARC-GS is embedded within the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, one of the largest research institutes with the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. As such, the activities of ARC-GS are mainly concerned with social scientific research.

Currently, ARC-GS has approximately 85 members, including about 35 PhD candidates. All researchers (from PhD students to Full Professors) within the Amsterdam Institute for Social Sciences Research (AISSR) are eligible for membership, and we also consider gender and sexuality scholars from other research institutes and faculties at the UvA. Please send us an email if you think you are eligible and want to become a member.

Please find a list of all current members and visiting scholars members below.

  • Visiting Scholars

ARC-GS offers non-stipendiary visiting scholarships to scholars who conduct research related to gender and/or sexuality in the social sciences, specifically anthropology, sociology, political science or geography and developments studies.

The call for ARC-GS Visiting Scholars for the 2020-2021 academic year has closed.

We are happy to welcome our 2020-2021 visiting scholars

    Yumna Asaf

Dr. Yumna Asaf will join us from September 2021 till June 2020 and will be part of the programme group xxx.

Project: Dr. Asaf will work on a project entitled The Deliberate Creation of Gender in Communalism and the Resistance Against It: A Select Study of the Contemporary Women’s Movement in India. This study investigates the agency women on the forefront of the struggle against right-wing extremism in the present socio-political context of India and the ways in which this struggle is challenging the growth of communalism in India. Largely based on personal interviews, the research shall throw light on the endeavours and aspirations of these women and more importantly, the effects of their mobilization. Through this research, Dr. Asaf traces how, while sexist communalism strengthens its ground every day, women have found opportunities to create a movement of resistance and this is posing new challenges to the growth of communalism in India.

    Jan Therese Mendes

Dr. Jan Therese Mendes will join us from January 2012 till May 2020 and will be part of the programme group Political Sociology. Dr. Mendes holds a PhD in Social and Political Thought from York University, Canada (October 2019). Currently Mendes is a postdoctoral fellow in studies of gender and race with the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Stavanger, Norway (November 2019-present).

Project: As an ARC-GS Visiting Scholar, Dr. Mendes will further develop and disseminate scholarship on Black migrant women’s reproduction, Black mournability, and racist nationalism within the welfare states of Norway, Sweden, and Canada. Herein Dr. Mendes inquires into how the racist-sexist conditions that vacate the worth of Black life and refuse Black national belongings can be witnessed through the bio-policies that inform: 1. the institutional criminalization of Black women’s fertility and sexuality, 2. the prevailing apathy to Black maternal and infant death; and 3. the quotidian nature of the Black mother’s near-fatal encounters with the penal forces that regulate public space.
