Progress with regards to gender equality appears to be stalling since the late 1990s. Within public discourse, this development is explained primarily through either solely internal or merely external mechanisms, which does not pay tribute to the actual variety of underlying reasons. In her lecture, Prof. Risman argued for the necessity of a multi-level stratification theory that takes internal influences on individuals, the structural organization of institutions, the cultural logics and the interactions between different actors into account. Based on her recently published book, Risman portrayed and analyzed different ways in which millennials are negotiating and struggling with the societal gender structure on different analytical levels.
